Cognitive Complexity offers a new measurement of how hard code is to understand - one that strikes developers as intuitively right. This paper describes Cognitive Complexity, a new metric formulated to more accurately measure the relative understandability of methods. In doing so, it addresses the shortcomings of Cyclomatic Complexity in this area.

Cognitive complexity is a psychological characteristic or psychological variable that indicates how complex or simple is the frame and perceptual skill of a person.

A person who is measured high on cognitive complexity tends to perceive nuances and subtle differences which a person with a lower measure, indicating a less complex cognitive structure for the task or activity, does not.

Increment for breaks in the linear flow Another guiding principle in the formulation of Cognitive Complexity is that structures that break code’s normal linear flow from top to bottom, left to right require maintainers to work harder to understand that code.

Cognitive complexity refers to the number of processes required to complete specific tasks. Although its origins lie in psychology and personal construct theory, it's also used as a measurement of task difficulty in other fields. Understanding cognitive complexity aids individuals and organizations in decision-making.

The axiomatic approach to Kolmogorov complexity was further developed in the book (Burgin ) and applied to software metrics (Burgin and Debnath, ; Debnath and Burgin, ).

In information processing, complexity is a measure of the total number of properties transmitted by an object and detected by an observer. The authors define the information-processing approach to measurement of thinking, which emphasizes the way situational information is perceived, selected, organized and interpreted.

Using this approach, the authors have developed two interpretive exercises, The Holocaust and The Bomb by: Understanding and quantifying cognitive complexity level in mathematical problem solving items course, substituting surface features can create variability within a family and hence the hierarchical model includes assumptions about the distribution of the item Size: KB.

Information flow is also an important factor in the co-evolutionary process (Carley and Hill, ; Uhl-Bien et al., ). If the directive/participative distinctions lead to differential effects on information flow then they may also lead to different co-evolutions of human and social capital.

Recall and carryover of information is better when practice trials are spaced or distributed rather than massed (Sohlberg, Ehlhardt, & Kennedy, ; Sohlberg & Turkstra, ).
